TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 thousand million content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, spurred by new content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this output is classified as low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, factory-style content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.
“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we want to give people the option to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” said a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
The platform disclosed that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are added to the service daily, making AI content a limited portion of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be capable of limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they watch by using the content preference feature in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the tool include politics, fashion, beauty, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
TikTok’s rules mandate creators to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.
Furthermore, the platform will henceforth attach an AI-generated tag to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This step is intended to stop users from seeking to evade the tagging system.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is additionally establishing a $2m awareness program for specialists and organizations to develop educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.
Moderation Strategy
TikTok has justified its safety measures, during debate over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection department in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive stated that human moderation would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by removing the most harmful content prior to it has to be seen by staff. The platform announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
