RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
